I was accustomed to -- if not being respected ... being feared, at the very least.

The fact remains that you can't instill fear without being frightening. If you've lost the power that makes you feared, you can't expect people to continue to feel the same. You'll have to find some other way. At the very least threats of future retribution.

Humans have trouble anticipating a painful future, even if it's truly inevitable. They're much more likely to ignore the facts and hope.

Well, particularly creative threats can be somewhat effective. But in the end they'll want to see evidence.
